Newtown Judo Club is a not-for-profit organisation established to promote the sport of judo in the Sydney Metropolitan Area, Newtown and the surrounding suburbs.
We believe that diligent practice provides valuable physical and mental benefits. Judo improves fitness, strength, co-ordination, balance and dexterity. It also enhances concentration, self-discipline and confidence. Judo also provides a sound basis for self-defence.
We train at Coronation Hall 95 Lennox St. Newtown. This central location is close to public transport and easily accessible. The club coordinates activities between relevant sporting and martial arts organisations and provides social networking and support for its members.
The club has a comprehensive Newtown Judo Club Member Protection Policy (click to access) and a Newtown Judo Club Code of Conduct (click to access) to protect members and ensure ethical and responsible behaviour. The club, instructors and members are insured and instructors have current Working with Children clearances.

The Newtown Judo Club was established to teach the traditional Japanese martial arts of judo, ju-jutsu and karate. The dojo operates under the auspices of Lotus Dojos Australia which has branches at Engadine and Thirroul.
Our primary aim is to preserve and promote traditional forms of martial arts. We teach Kodokan judo, the style taught by Jigoro Kano the founder of judo at the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo. We also teach traditional Japanese ju-jutsu preserving the cultural and physical roots that were shaped into judo by Professor Kano.
We provide carefully tailored tuition for men and women in a safe environment. Our primary objective is to provide quality instruction in traditional Japanese martial arts through the maintenance and strengthening of linkages between dojos, instructors and students. We conduct regular visits to Japan to promote sporting and cultural exchange for students, and to build our professional teaching capacity. Our last visit was in December 2015.
Our instructors were taught by Patricia Harrington (6th Dan Judo), who founded Sosuishi-ryu Australia on the 12th July, 1965. She began studying ju-jutsu under the 15th inheritor of Nippon Sosuishi-ryu, the late Shusaku Shitama in 1964. Ms Harrington studied judo under the legendary Kyuzo Mifune (10th Dan) and Keiko Fukuda (10th Dan) visiting Japan more than 27 times to further her studies. She continues to teach at Engadine and visits Newtown Judo Club regularly to provide expert tuition.
